RESON ICE – Resonating ice. The Montasio glacier experience.

February 20th, 2024

Reson-ice is the Friulian project selected from the call Radio Utopia – News from the World launched on the occasion of the 18th International Architecture Biennale in Venice 2023. It was also hosted at the Cité de l’architecture et du patrimoine in Paris as part of the National Architecture Days (JNA) and in February 2024 at the Chicago Architecture Center.

World Water Day 2024 becomes the occasion to recount the evolution of Reson-ice from sound experience to educational project to totemic installation on the territory. In less than a year since the launch of the project, transversal actors such as science, industry, art have given life to a multifaceted experience that today takes the form of a popularisation event strongly linked to sustainability issues and able to make an effective contribution to goals 6 “Clean and Accessible Water” and 17 “Partnership for Goals” of the United Nations 2030 Agenda.

During the afternoon of 21 March, at the Torre di Santa Maria of Confindustria Udine, the past, present and future of this living work will be explored, which is only the beginning of a wonderful journey of discovery in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region.

@Credits: Pietro Tonchia and Paola Fattori are two lawyers and musicians from Udine who together devised Reson-Ice to create awareness of the fragility of the water system and push for its protection. The project was made possible thanks to the contribution of Daniela Piussi, a mountain guide, for the audio recording on Montasio and received support from Federico Cazorzi, professor of hydrology at the University of Udine and member of the Italian Glaciological Committee. Maddalena Spa, an regional company with an international vocation, specialised in water measuring instruments, also believed in the project and provided the sound and precision of a volumetric water meter that evokes a symbolic countdown and recalls the urgency of preserving this precious resource. The project saw the special participation of Giovanni Sollima, author and performer of N-Ice Cello Concerto, for the docufilm by Corrado Bungaro, Wasabi filmakers (“Storia del violoncello di ghiaccio”, Raiplay), in which the sound of the ice cello sculpted by artist Tim Linhart on the Presena glacier intones the last song of the glaciers.

Artistic and musical part: Carlo Vidoni, artist active in various expressive fields, Giovanna Pezzetta , pianist and composer, Chiara Carminati, writer of books for children and young people.
